As I was putting on my socks this morning to head to the gym, a thought infiltrated my mind:
“I have no idea how these socks, or any clothes for that matter, are made.”
Not a clue.
I get that there’s some type of threading done. That it’s not a super intensive skill to learn since many-a clothes are unfortunately made in sweatshops.
But if I had a gun to my head and had to create any sort of clothing from any type of material, then, well, I’d be dead quicker than that UnitedHealthcare CEO. (oooof, too soon?)
It reminded me of an economic lesson called “I, Pencil” by Mitlon Friedman. The point of this economic lesson is simple, yet profound: Nobody actually knows how to make a pencil from scratch. The eraser comes from one part of the world, the wood from another part, the graphite from yet another part.
Friedman’s story showcases how specialization is responsible for everything we enjoy in modern life. Nobody this side of Elon Musk (and even that’s a stretch) knows how anything works.
Like clothes being made.
Or Wi-Fi delivering internet.
But does your lack of understanding of how clothes are made make you avoid clothes?
Obviously not because that would be both stupid and illegal in most settings.
And yet, business owners make this mistake all the time. They expose themselves in the nude constantly when it comes to unlocking growth in their business.
But you don’t have to know how something works to benefit from it.
Imagine how much faster your business could grow with an email pro writing juicy and addictive emails that makes your audience salivate as they whip out their credit cards to pay you.
Or how much easier tax season would be if you hired an accountant who specializes in tax savings.
Or how many fewer headaches and frustrations you’d have if you empowered your team to fail instead of micromanaging them like a helicopter parent.
And yet, in the hundreds of business owners I’ve talked to over the years, they don’t make this connection.
It’s like not wearing clothes or not using Wi-Fi because you don’t understand how it works.
I’ll repeat: you don’t have to know how something works to benefit from it.
Wanna see how this can work with your emails and email strategy?
Hit reply, and let’s jump on a quick call to make sure we’re a good fit.
And if we are?
I’ll show you the true magic of specialization.
Capisce?
